Environmental Design Consultancy with Steve Allin
Born in 1955 in the U.K. Steve studied interior design furnishing and textiles at the London College of Furniture in the early 70's. He gained a life long interest in ecological architecture and lifestyles whilst living and working on pioneering alternative farms and smallholdings in Wales and Ireland.
Settled in Kenmare in the late 80's he developed his interest of environmental sustainable living by designing and building his own home, during the process of which he learnt about the possibility of using hemp as a building material. He subsequently plastered the interior of his house, which was a great success and led to the establishing of a hemp building supply and building service.
In the following years this activity led to forming with other people from the food and textile industry a company called Hemp Ireland Ltd. (1998-2003) to research and develop a Hemp processing facility in Ireland. During this time he gained a depth of knowledge of the whole hemp growing and processing operation on a large or small scale, with special reference to the end use as a building material.
When it became apparent that a market for such materials had to be expanded in order to justify the necessary investment, he has concentrated on providing advice, design, materials and contracting services for those wishing to build with hemp.
